Día De Los Muertos Project Reflection
The most challenging part of this project was deciding who to dedicate the ofrenda to. It was a challenge because so many great people have passes. And I thought it would be rude to choose one person over the other. But finally I decided to dedicate it to the wonderful Sr.Johan Cruyff. I dedicated it to him because as stated in the artist statement he was one of the most influential people to the wonderful sport of soccer. Even after retirement he was still a need tactical manager. Even after life his tactics are still brought to life by the skilled professionals that play the sport of soccer.
What I enjoyed the most of the cultural connections at the beginning of the project was learning about the Aztecs and the Mayans. I enjoyed it because it's apart of Mexican culture and I'm from Mexican descent. But not only that, it was interesting learning about their life style, diet, and traditions. One example of life style is that in the Aztec empire you could be the slave of a slave. Which sounds pretty terrible because I could just imagine a mistreated slave letting all of his anger out on the his slave. Like Mrs.Howard said that is the lowest you could go, and thats pretty low. It was fun teasing my friend Pablo by telling him that if he lived during Aztec times he would be the slave of slave. Another cultural connection I really enjoyed about this project was the American influence in my peers work. I enjoyed It because It brought together two cultures in one project.
I received some critique from my friends, I would ask them to critique if it was ascetically pleasing or if they thought it was grade A quality work. I think that their critique helped me because in the end I really liked my final ofrenda. Also my partner Coby and I received critique on our journal for the 'spying' on the Aztecs.
I think that I deserve an A on this entire project because not only did I meet all the deadlines, I also think I exceeding requirements. An example I'm really proud of how my offend turned out, with the food and the candles, also the incense put the cherry on top of the perfect sundae. All my other work was very good like my notes, journal, vocabulary test, vocabulary story.
If I could change something about this project it would be to hand out more assignments. I think that for the time we were given, which was like 3 weeks we should've done more work. Because if everybody tried the offend could be done in two days not 1 week.
Artist Statement:
My ofrenda is in honor of the legend Johan Cruyff, I chose him because even though he passed in 2016, and retired from football in 1984 he still has an impact in the football world to this date. Teams still play by his invention of tiki-taka, this form of play consisted of the false 9 position that made Lionel Messi into one of the greatest players ever. Johan is the top assister and goal scorer in dutch history, and it was an honor to watch analyze games, even though I never watched him play I still watched him as a sports reporter a couple of times. Johan led the Netherlands to many world cup finals,semi-finals, and quarter-finals. This is the reason I chose Sr. Johan Cruyff as a person I wanted to honor.
