College & Career Connections
This internship influenced in many ways what career path I want to follow. I have had a few career paths that I have been heavily interested in over the past few years, and being a teacher was not one of them. As the days of the first week went by I had already realized what type of professional environment I want to be in. It made me realized that I want to focus on a career that involves helping younger people, which could potentially be in the teaching field. The internship very much opened my eye on what it takes to be an adult working in this field. It requires a lot of passion for your job, as dealing with a class of 28 students is not the easiest. My mentor, Chris Olivas, did a great job of opening my view on this, as time by time I saw him always willing to help his students out even when the time seemed stressful. How did it prepare me? This internship prepared me because I didn't really have one specific job at the internship. I was really "all over the place", this showed me what it is like to be in a teaching environment as you're not always just doing one job. For example some of jobs were, helping around in the class when students have questions or wonderings, curating past projects, lunch duty and organizing papers when it was needed.

Part 1: How did you measure the success of the work you did while you were an intern? What did you learn from this? I measured my success at the end of the day, the days were very long but it very nice to reflect on at the end of the day. I learned that I really enjoyed my time at my internship, because I developed skills that I hadn’t yet developed. How did you make a meaningful contribution to your workplace? I made a meaningful contribution by always be available to my mentor and also the students I worked with. I was ready to do the tasks I was asked to do. How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education? My work as an intern was significant because I devoloped skills that I hadn’t yet developed, such as helping others out in a teaching manner. How was your work significant or meaningful to the world beyond school and your specific internship site? My work is meaningful to the world beyond school because it has prepared me on how to perform in a professional work site. These skills will be highly benificial for any job regardless of the field. How did your project go from an idea or inspiration to a final product? My project went from an idea to and actual piece by me putting time and effort into reaching my initial vision for it. I struggled at first to decide on the final outcome but now I had a nice piece. What did you learn about your own work from your internship project? I learned about my willingness to work, being at internship is very different than being at school. Here I have to be at my best work ethic at all times and I believe I achieved that. Part 2:
What new appreciations did you develop while working as an intern? Why? I gained a new appreciation for teachers, because being in this environment really showed me what a teacher does for their class. I devoloped this because as an intern I got a small glimpse of a teachers stress. What qualities or characteristics did you see in the people around you that you want to develop in yourself? Why? Some qualities I saw from my mentor was his passion for his job. For example, he has an astronomy club and he took time out of his week to set up telescopes at Palomar Mt., this just show how passionate about his job. How did your view of life beyond high school change or develop during your time as an intern? I for sure have a more clear sight of a goal I have after high school. However this goal is still devolving, hopefully by the end of internship I am a few steps closer to it. Starter Set;The "Starter Set" for the photo essay. Each photo shows a little of what a regular day here looks like. Descriptions of these photos will be found in the final draft of the photo essay.
Journey Self- Advocacy
How do you advocate for yourself at internship? At internship I advocate myself in many ways, such as, setting up my own schedule of assigned things to-do. I get many assignment throughout the day, I usually tell my mentor when I will have them completed based on my work time. This hasn't been a problem and has actually made having a big work load not feel overwhelming. However this skill was developed through the course of the first week. At first I was letting myself to be more controlled do to me being nervous about being in a work environment. This changed but obviously not drastically because I still have to follow what I am told do to. I feel like this is a necessary skill to develop in any work environment. I have also started having conversations with my mentor about how the day will look like. This I feel has been very great because I get to plan out my day, overall very glad about that. Are you following the advice to be an intern that is remembered? I genuinely believe I will be an intern that is remembered, I have done a great job to also build bonds with teachers & staff that aren't my mentor. Showing good work ethic and willing-less to work even when you are unmotivated is a great thing to have. I have also built friendships with students, I do my best to be a good role-model while in the class room, but also try and have friendly bonds with those that I help the most. This makes it easier for them to let me how them. What I plan on creating??
I am currently in progress of making a reference notebook for the math class. The reference notebook has notes and step by steps on their weekly math lessons. I came up with this idea because I realized that many students weren't taking notes in class & that resulted with them being stuck & asking for help. The pages are currently made on a spiral notebook and I plan on turning them in to a more professionals looking classroom tool once I talk to my mentor more about. When I mentioned the idea to my mentor he was very onboard because he said it was a plan of his to create one in the near future but just hasn't had the time to make it. I talked to some students and asked them if they thought it would be help. They replied with yes, and also some very helpful critique, such as, adding color and more aesthetic to divide section in the note page. What skills will I need to make it awesome?! Skills I will need to make it awesome will be creativity, note taking & patience. I say creativity because I have to be able to organize the notes on the page and some how make them interesting enough for a middle school students to sit their and learn from it. I think I have succeeded in that skill due to the middle school liking the notebook so far. Note taking; A skill that is so overwhelmingly important because you have to know that you are taking better notes than the students so they can actually learn from notebook. Patience; taking notes can be very time consuming so patience is key to be able to finish the task without getting bored and affecting your work quality. What support will I need? Considering this is a notebook I wont need support other than myself keeping focus and fishing the notes. My project isn't difficult but it is very important for it to be legible to the student. Reflection about Internship so far!! Internship has been a learning experience so far, interning at a middle school is very busy, I help around all day with the students, with some of them even building a friendship. Here I take a role of being a role model for the younger students and at the same time building a friendship to be able to make it a fun time when I am helping them. I have had some struggles, like dealing with some students that didn't want to complete their work. Questions asked!!
Reflection!! The interview went very well! I learned a lot about the unseen aspects of being a teacher. All the questions I asked were pretty much answered to the point. This interview taught me that become a great teacher you have to work on self improvement before you can help out a student. A low from this conversation is that I wished I asked more question of the process it took to become a teacher, I asked many questions but they were just mainly about how the in classroom job is.
First Impressions!!
The first few days of interning at HTMNC have been blast! Very different from my initial thoughts of what I thought the internship was going to be like. I noticed that working here is a very fast pace job, despite it not seeming like one. A few skills that are very important when taking a role as an intern here are; always being available, being patient with student & of course always supporting them even when they're wrong. An example of times I have had to use those skills are when I was assigned my personal group of students by Ms. Perro ( my mentors work colleague ). During this time I had to use all the skills I mentioned, and I feel as if I did pretty good. The students were exited about working with me and even finished all of their work for the day while I was helping them. |
